“Hugely professional and clearly very passionate about what he does. Having scoured the internet for the ‘right’ personal trainer and still been uninspired, I chose Oliver after he was recommended by a friend. Oliver has understood my specific needs and provided me with exactly what I required in terms of a programme which will fit my slightly unconventional work/life routine. He is clearly very knowledgeable within his field and does not just offer a ‘one size fits all’ service. Whatever your needs, goals, age, experience, or ability, I can thoroughly recommend Oliver."

"I wouldn’t usually choose a man to help me battle the middle-age spread, but my husband knew Olly from his cycling club and recommended him. I also knew I didn't want to be shouted at or do any macho bootcamp tyre-pulling. Olly listened to what I was trying to achieve and found articulate ways to push me out of my comfort zone. A month after my last session with him, I feel much more positive about exercising, have learnt not to just stop when things get a bit hard (mostly) and I am more focused about the exercises that I do. I am even about to go and try one of his circuit classes - I am not sure which of us is most surprised about that."

"Having searched the internet for a personal trainer I was very taken by Olly's personal story. His recovery and sheer resilience made me think if he can overcome and indeed achieve so much then he can surely motivate me to get fitter and lose a bit of weight. Olly has helped me achieve these goals and more in the last few months. I cannot imagine stopping exercising now. Despite my moaning and groaning I am enjoying the sessions and all the added benefits. My only regret is that I wish I had thought about finding a personal trainer like Olly much sooner.
He is a very motivating trainer because he is positive, energetic and humorous while pushing you to work that bit harder to achieve what you thought you could not achieve. Olly has an encyclopaedic knowledge of training and fitness and is really patient and meticulous at explaining exactly how to do each exercise properly to achieve maximum benefit. At the same time, he is very good at listening to what you want and tailoring training sessions accordingly. Olly is also incredibly generous with his time and flexible around my hectic work schedule. I have never had a personal trainer before but he seems the ideal personal trainer and his energy and zest for life are contagious."

"Thank you soooo much for your excellent training sessions that have certainly put me through my paces. Your coaching tips, words of encouragement and yes...even your cheesy one-liners have made each session such a buzz. You have re-ignited my love of exercise and reassured me that my body is still able to cope with it.
What a fantastic 10 weeks. You have a totally honest approach to your business which transcends everything you do. It is what makes you such a great trainer and all round good guy. I will definitely be recommending you to others and needing you in 2018 for the Great North Run."

"I have trained in Oliver's classes and been very impressed with his professional approach. For me, having tried various instructors in the past, the key factor that sets Oliver quite dramatically apart is the informed, scientific basis behind his programs. He's clearly highly enthusiastic about the latest sports science research and manages to effectively incorporate this into the real world training environment. There is no time wasting, no flannel and no attempt to push products on which he is offered a commission. A genuine chap offering a quality, structured workout. I don't give praise lightly and would unreservedly state that he is among the best of the Hull area trainers. There are no shortcuts, but put the effort in, match Oliver's passion, and you'll reap the rewards."

"Olly is massively enthusiastic about YOUR fitness and how you are progressing. He monitors your improvement, helps you understand your strengths as well as the areas that need more work. Above all he's a great guy too - I've totally changed my body shape since working with Olly and I always look forward to my class because I know it is personally tailored for me."

"Working with Olly has been a fantastic experience. I had a clear goal I wanted to achieve: to train for the police fitness test and ensure I was able to meet the bleep test requirements. He designed a bespoke programme with this in mind and I have seen a big improvement in my fitness and well-being. I can now easily achieve the required fitness levels in the test, and have a new love for exercise. Olly is a welcoming and knowledgeable coach, and he’s helped me to achieve big lifestyle improvements."

"I have been doing Olly's circuit training sessions for a couple of months now and thoroughly enjoy the brilliant full body workout I get. The best thing about the sessions is that they are all-inclusive, everyone works at their own level and pace, they suit beginners but also challenge the more experienced. I would (and frequently do) highly recommend Olly's circuits to anyone who wants a fun, challenging and different workout."

"From the first moment I got in touch with Olly for fitness training, he was exceptionally kind, supportive and informative. Olly was very flexible and offered many ways in which to contact him. Feeling incredibly nervous about starting the training, due to a recent trauma in my life which had affected my health, I met with Olly and other members of the circuit training, to be greeted with encouragement and inspiration that I will be able to succeed. It instantly helped me to feel at ease, to know that certain parts of the workout could be adapted to individual needs. Olly was fantastic at this, at no point did I feel inadequate to others even when I needed to have things changed slightly. Olly was very sensitive and incredibly encouraging. I enjoyed the outdoor experience, by my third week Olly commented on my improvement and that he was impressed with how far I had come, but really that was all down to having such an inspirational instructor. I can't thank you enough."

"I met Olly while I was unable to run due to an achilles tendon problem which had cropped up (again) while I had been training for the Beverley 10K. Olly made some observations about my training routine (which I had downloaded from the internet) and linked it to my injury. This really resonated with me when I reflected on it and led me to ask Olly to help me train for my first marathon in September 2017.
Olly’s approach is holistic and considers all factors which could affect the outcome. It acknowledged my previous injury history and focused not just on the running itself but also on complementing it with resistance training and flexibility routines. Olly was always available to me throughout to offer ad hoc support, advice and encouragement and was good enough not to make a big deal of the fact that the one injury I incurred during the plan had occurred as a result of me deciding to add mileage on a long run (mileage which wasn’t in the plan for another fortnight).
Towards the end of the training plan I became very busy at work and dropped a number of training sessions as a result. Olly recognised this and the week before the race had a serious conversation with me which probably made the difference between me finishing the race or not. Had this conversation not taken place I would have attempted to run far too fast and the outcome could well have been not finishing. Instead I finished my first marathon in 3:41:46 which I am very proud of. I also gained PBs for half-marathon, 10k and 5k in the course of the training programme.
Since the race I have also sat down with Olly to review it and consider adjustments to get quicker next time. I’m looking forward to my next challenge and I will definitely be asking Olly to help me train for it."

"Oliver was my father-in-law's personal trainer. Jon had Parkinson's Disease from his 30s and at 65, needed a PT who was confident training a man who was very unsteady and sometimes non-communicative. Jon was particularly concerned about his balance, and about muscle wastage as he found he was able to move less and less and wanted to maintain as much mobility for as long as possible. Oliver was very knowledgeable, pragmatic and passionate about personal training, and was also reliable and kind to Jon.
Much of Jon and Olly's sessions consisted of using bands, and some of it seated. It felt very appropriate for Jon and his physical capabilities, all whilst pushing him further and building not only muscle, but also self-esteem, confidence and hope. We trusted Oliver to work well with Jon, and felt very happy with the training and attitude that Oliver undertook.
I would wholeheartedly recommend Olly to anyone as a PT; his breadth of knowledge coupled with his passion and enthusiasm for exercise and personal growth is something that we didn't see in anyone else."

"I want to express my thanks to Olly who has helped to rehabilitate my arm after my accident. I was beginning to think that I would never be able to lift my arm up high and that rotation was a thing of the past.
First, Olly asked me what I wanted to get out of the training sessions. Full use of the arm! Then he went away and organised an extensive tailor-made programme of exercise perfect for me.
He is a brilliant personal trainer always punctual, encouraging and enthused. He knows exactly what a particular exercise is for and for these reasons it was worth every penny!"

"Having been a weight trainer for many years, Olly introduced me to kettlebells and dedicated workouts using them. It totally transformed how I view my training for the future because Olly showed me how to introduce cardio with a weight workout.
However, Olly's strongest point is his attitude towards the people he is training. He listens to any concerns you may have - he very quickly appreciates your limitations and will stretch you to them without being obnoxious and screaming for "20 more seconds". And above all, throughout all my sessions, he never once looked at his mobile phone to check messages etc. He paid absolute attention to every minute I trained with him.
I have always been sceptical about PTs because of the stereotype but Olly cares and his knowledge (and explanations) abounds."
Mark
"I approached Olly last year to see if he would be able to provide a training programme for myself and my adult son and daughter. We all had different needs, ranging from weight loss, to building strength and improving overall fitness, and were starting from very different levels of fitness.
Olly has accommodated all of our requirements and produced an hour's training each week which we have all enjoyed and benefited from in equal measures. The time we have spent together with Olly, challenging ourselves and supporting each other in our efforts, has been pure gold.
He managed to make each session different, playing to our individual strengths and weaknesses and keeping us all interested and motivated.
We have each also attained or surpassed the targets we set ourselves.
I can’t thank Olly enough for what he has done for myself and my family or recommend him highly enough, whatever your fitness aims are."

"It is a pleasure to be working with Olly. With his evident knowledge and experience, he has re-invigorated my regular exercise regime. His positive and encouraging approach is helping me, being aged 78, to keep fit and active through a difficult patch. This, I am finding, is very supportive and know will stand me in good stead in the months to come, enabling me to return to full fitness as soon as possible."

"I was expecting my second child and felt very unfit and self-conscious when I saw Oliver's poster advertising exercise in pre- and post-pregnancy. I contacted him with an interest in his personal training services. Olly was very responsive and approachable. We had a meeting and I was super impressed with Olly's professionalism, knowledge and expertise of pre-pregnancy exercise. I felt I could trust him with the programme I was about to start.
During my sessions Olly always made sure that for every exercise he explained fully the reasons why we were carrying out the exercise and what we should not be doing in pre-pregnancy conditions. Olly is a really fun guy to be around and I enjoyed every training session and felt very positive afterwards, which is great for the state of mind.
I have continued training with Olly post-pregnancy and have achieved the results I wished for and continue to do so. I would recommend him without a hesitation. He is one of very few who is fully qualified in pre- and post-pregnancy training, which is imperative in choosing a personal trainer."

"I have worked with Oliver since November of 2021. I have experienced a notable improvement in general body strength, posture and resilience. Oliver is personable, knowledgeable and his ways of working mean that keeping yourself accountable for your progress is very straightforward. Those shying away from personal training for fear of having to deal with the stereotypical 'Fitness Bro' should give Oliver a try!"

"Following a tough year I was stuck in a rut and lacking motivation for exercise, feeling very unfit, had low self esteem and confidence. I contacted Olly to start some 1-2-1 PT sessions twice a week. Olly came to my house and spent time with me to see what I wanted from the sessions, the areas I wanted to work on and looking at what exercise I enjoyed. As I wanted to lose weight and improve fitness and strength Olly devised a programme of kettlebells and boxing. Both sessions are always well-planned and focus in the areas I want to work on. The sessions are tough and challenging but they work and I am seeing the results.
The patience, encouragement and enjoyment factor Olly has brought to the sessions has helped my motivation, self-esteem and confidence grow. I have lost weight and continue to do so and now look forward to my workouts.
In the last three months I have started doing two of the group classes as well - Kettlercise® and HIIT circuit - which I wouldn't have had the confidence to do a year ago. I really enjoy the sessions and, like the PT sessions, they are well-planned, tough but good fun. Everyone who attends the classes is friendly and provides extra encouragement.
I would definitely recommend training with Olly, either on a 1-2-1 basis or attending his classes. Both are hard work but good fun and because of the encouragement received the results you want are achievable."

"I really enjoy running and have found recently I've been suffering more injuries, so decided I needed to try and increase my flexibility, mobility and strength. I had a set of PT sessions with Olly, which were great.
Olly is very knowledgeable and tailored the PT plan for me and we worked a lot on Pilates exercises which was all new for me.
10 weeks on with Olly's advice and support I feel so much better, less injuries....my hamstrings don't feel so tight and I'm now able to implement the routine before and after runs which has made a huge difference! I'd highly recommend Olly....thank you!"

"The health review was a great place to start. We really looked at my stress levels from work, eating and exercise habitats, and body measurements. The outcome of some of these were not great, but you were honest and supportive which meant that focusing on improving these felt achievable.
The PT sessions were just what I needed and made me accountable for my fitness. The Boxercise® focus of the PT sessions were right up my street. Not only did I find them enjoyable, but I found them to be a great stress reliever, physically challenging and even sometimes mentally challenging (remembering the sequences). Within the sessions, the routines were mixed up often enough to keep me interested, challenged and learning, while not feeling out of my depth. It was good that towards the end of the block of PT sessions we went back to some of the original routines, which allowed me to see how far I had come.
Whilst doing the Boxercise® PT sessions I could feel my own fitness changing, my parkrun times started to improve but the biggest change was how much I relied on my inhaler. I used to use my asthma as an excuse to not give 100% when doing exercise, as I was afraid of an asthma attack but you pushed me enough to get the most out of me without pushing me too far (always supportive). I now find myself able to do most exercise without the need to use my inhaler and as a result of this my confidence in trying/doing new exercises has grown (I now even take part in spin classes, voluntarily, and enjoy them).
The review at the end of the PT sessions block showed that there had been an improvement in my health all-round. I used to do exercise because I had to, whereas I now do it because I enjoy it."

"I live for group fitness classes and after attending a recent Indoor Cycling class with Oliver Johnston was absolutely blown away by his motivational personality and encouragement. The level of the workout was pitched well to all participants, with challenges being served up to all, well-aligned with the essence of realistic and engaging cycling.
The choice of music during the forty-five minute session was fabulous, was embraced by all participants in the class, many of whom (including myself) busted a move or two in excitement. The speed-work, topped off with a finale allowed all to dig deep and feel a sense of achievement. I cannot wait to attend more of OJ's classes in the future. Bring the Spin!"

"I am in my mid 50s and have had an on/off relationship with exercise throughout my entire life. I know it is good for me, and I enjoy the results but it has always been an effort. Lockdown gave me the perfect excuse to give up entirely, and knowing it would be so much harder when I restarted I struggled to motivate myself, hence my reason for getting in touch with Oliver.
I have never had personal training before and was somewhat nervous as to what to expect. From the outset I felt very comfortable with Oliver. He is professional in his approach and very personable. He was keen to establish what I was looking to achieve from our sessions, and other than my desire to rediscover my motivation, I explained that I had noticed my strength and balance had significantly deteriorated over the last couple of years. On his recommendation I agreed to give kettlebells a try, and booked in for 10 sessions.
Oliver is very knowledgeable and explained each exercise thoroughly. The sessions pushed me, but never more than I could realistically manage. I felt my attempts were somewhat pathetic at times but Oliver was always very encouraging, and I felt a great sense of achievement each week.
At the end of the 10 weeks I still have a way to go, but even over such a short period, I have noticed my strength and balance have improved and I have rediscovered my 'get up and go', giving me the motivation to continue.
As well as continuing with the kettlebell workouts at home, I now also regularly attend Oliver's Pilates class and am going to give circuit training a try."

"The post-natal exercise class was of utmost benefit to me personally. Olly taught us about how to hold our cores properly and he even diagnosed my abdominal split, which I didn't know was there. This meant I could go to the physiotherapist for additional help before I made it worse through lack of knowledge. During the classes my posture improved no end and my back pain almost disappeared as a result of the carefully controlled core workouts.
All of the mums I met really enjoyed the fact they could take part in a class without the guilt of leaving their child behind. It was great having a structured workout, including resistance exercises, that included my baby. Not only was this a great way to recover my fitness but it was also a brilliant bonding exercise as my baby really enjoyed the fun and attention too."

"Oliver brings a degree of professionalism and attention to detail that is unusual in the field. Even in a group class situation, he focuses upon the particular needs of the individual both in terms of technique and motivation. His exercise programmes are varied and inventive, very carefully prepared and regularly updated. He cares passionately about his work and about achieving the best results that he can for his clients. Perhaps most importantly of all, however, Oliver makes his classes a huge amount of fun; you are likely to feel that you have pushed yourself to the limit at the end of one of his sessions but also that you have had a great deal of enjoyment along the way!"

"I have been attending HIIT, Strongman and circuit training classes with Olly for a couple of months now. After struggling for years to find an exercise class or routine that I could stick to I had come to the conclusion that I was just not a 'fitness person'. I mean, who in their right mind wants to go run around in Lycra after a full day at work anyway? Then my parents recommended Olly, so I figured I would give the whole exercise thing one last try before I threw the towel in.
From the first conversation, Olly was encouraging and supportive, discussing the various classes at length to help me decide which would suit me best. He wasn't at all perturbed by my declaration that I hate exercise (especially cardio).
I attended HIIT first, then Strongman, then circuits. Two of my daughters joined me at HIIT and my son started going to spin. We are all varying levels of fitness, ability, confidence and enthusiasm, and we all feel comfortable, supported and welcome at each of Olly's classes. It is a credit to Olly that he can engage and motivate anyone willing to turn up and give it a go. He is now training three generations of my family, from my youngest at 15 years old to my parents who are in their 70s.
Olly's creativity (HIIT in a multi-storey carpark!) and determination to help everyone succeed shines through in every class. So much so that, as much as I hate to admit it, I am a convert. I never dreamed I would ever get excited about donning Lycra and throwing heavy stuff around a carpark after work, but now genuinely hate missing a class. I have even turned down a pint so I could attend a session in the rain... I still hate cardio though.
The best part though is the results! I have never felt so fit, powerful and comfortable in my own skin. The classes I attend are designed in such a way that you start at whatever level you are comfortable with, but Olly, and the rest of the (very friendly) group encourage you to challenge your own perceptions of what you are capable of so you are always raising the bar and pushing the limits of your own self-belief.
Trust me, if you don't think you are a 'fitness person' try Olly's classes. If he can motivate me he can motivate anyone."

"Take the leap, it could just transform your life!
It's difficult to know where to start really. I attended my first class with Olly 18 months ago just before my 46th birthday. Typical bloke really, I guess. Life had taken over and easier to just bury your head rather than confront the issues. I wasn't in the best place, physically or mentally. I knew things needed to change, I just didn't know how. I took a punt, a chance to see what else was out there. Not being the most sociable of people it was a daunting step joining, initially, one of Olly's outdoor HIIT classes but honestly, I've never looked back since. For some maybe a gym works, but within a group training session you can almost feel everyone else's motivation and it spurs you on that little bit more.
It was a lovely July evening (hold onto those nights as we've trained in rain, sleet and snow), everyone was so welcoming. I think this is key with Olly: he has groups of individuals, from all walks of life and at different stages in their journeys, but somehow at a class with Olly's guidance - and to be frank the worst ever cheesy quotes - everyone comes together and not only gets fitter but has a laugh doing it.
The people you meet will only ever encourage you, support you and make you feel welcome. They are a huge reason why anyone thinking of joining Olly should: genuinely you couldn't meet a nicer set of people. Yes, the first class may be daunting, it may feel tough but be assured within a matter of weeks you will only ever wonder why you didn't do it before.
I'm 18 months into my journey. I now attend HITT classes, spin classes, even the Christmas day circuit class - yes, it's a thing! My fitness goes from strength to strength and with it my mental well-being has been transformed. In addition to this my confidence has grown and I feel so much more comfortable in group situations.
I'm amazed at how exercise and a group of lovely people has helped me find a way of controlling my anxiety, to the point where I have recently been able to come off my medication. I realise not everyone can do this but for my journey it was the right decision. I honestly believe I could not have got to this point without that first jump into the unknown.
I can't believe how positive I now feel. I have so much more energy, I've lost weight and toned up. I don't feel the need for the usual vices and if I'm having a bad week, then I will just squeeze an extra class in!"

"After telling Olly about a back injury that still pained me he suggested Pilates to strengthen my core. I signed up to his private classes not knowing what to expect, and feeling quite apprehensive about my fitness level and ability. Olly is extremely professional and every class is carefully planned and prepared so that the client reaps the benefits of his time, whether it's one to one or in a class environment, you genuinely feel he is there for you. His knowledge is astounding and he has a natural ability to put everyone at ease whilst still pushing you to achieve your best. His strength and ability to perform the moves is quite awe-inspiring and he always gives a progression so the class suits all levels and abilities. Pilates gives me the chance to still my mind which I find relaxing and my whole body benefits from the range of moves performed in each session. I am experiencing less back pain and my body definitely feels stronger.
Since signing up for Olly's Pilates class he has inspired me to try different forms of exercise such as Kettlercise® and spin, both of which I now love. The Kettlercise® class takes place outside in all weathers and the energy from Olly and the other class participants really makes it fun. It's a fast-paced hour of exercise with different weights of kettle bells. Olly moves through the exercises quickly providing clear, concise direction and really motivates you to 'go heavy' with the kettlebells. He is always watching to make sure the moves are carried out correctly so as not to cause injury and I really value his feedback and at times 'hands-on' approach which helps me get the best out of the exercises I'm performing. Since working with Olly I have lost inches and feel fitter and stronger both physically and mentally. I am a great advocate of Olly's classes and cannot thank him enough for his support, motivation and friendship."

"Olly is unique among trainers and fitness folk I have met. He combines a real in-depth understanding of physiology with a knack for listening and understanding exactly what it is you’re after. He’s done a custom programme for me and I’m also a regular at his circuit classes. With Olly you are guaranteed a proper, useful and demanding workout (that works for everyone regardless of ability) and some good-humoured encouragement. And if you like techno, it’s an added bonus."

"Having had little knowledge as to what TRX training entailed, I decided to try this type of exercise and very much enjoyed it! It gave me a great all-body workout using bodyweight and helped massively with improving strength. Even though I was participating in strength training already, TRX training helped me build on my weaker areas and see improvement week by week where I was able to increase my range and reps. It felt very safe and I liked the variety of exercises that were possible. Additionally, it was great to use the TRX to do a much deeper squat than I would have managed in regular training sessions. My tricep strength was pretty poor, and I was only able to do a regular push up on my knees before, TRX training helped me to gain the strength to achieve a full push up (and much more) in a fun way. It is great that the equipment can be used outdoors also!
I highly recommend trying TRX training, I really enjoyed the variety of exercises that can be done with it as well as the ability to suit it to my personal needs, and how easy it was to measure progress. Doing the training with Olly in PT sessions has also got the advantage of a balanced set of exercises and ensuring proper form is maintained during training which is of course vital."

"I started up with Olly for one-on-one Pilates in March 2023.
My goal was to increase my flexibility and strength so I could keep playing golf and ideally reduce my handicap.
I enjoy the sessions and have replaced some gym sessions with Pilates. The end results have been that I have improved by five shots from 14 to 9. The lowest I have ever been. As I approach 60 this is great.
The Pilates sessions with Olly are all designed to improve rotation and general flexibility and it has definitely been a reason behind my golf improvement.
Only downside is Olly is not really up to speed with proper football."

"I met Olly of OWJ Health and Fitness after being recommended by a friend. Olly is fully qualified and insured.
After having previous personal trainers I found Olly's approach and knowledge exceptional. He spent time with me to understand what my goals and objectives were, what exercises I enjoyed and what keeps me motivated. Olly spent time to understand what my fitness levels were and built me a tailored programme which would help me achieve my goals. Olly's approach is motivational and encouraging, but he also held me to account to stay focused and attend my sessions.
Olly also runs a number of different private group classes across Beverley, including spin, circuits and Pilates, all of which I attend. The classes are great, fun, friendly and a cost effective way to stay fit. I have met some great friends too over the last couple of years.
So if you are thinking of either joining a class or maybe a programme of personal training I would fully recommend Olly of OWJ Health and Fitness. His knowledge and expertise are exceptional and above all it is a very friendly approach making it easier for you to get involved and enjoy getting fit."

"Exercise has never been something that I have enjoyed, but knowing that I am at risk of a couple of genetic conditions I needed to sort myself out. Olly took me through a health assessment and developed a training schedule to help me build muscle. We set some goals, which was crucial for me to maintain motivation. Eight months down the line and I have ticked off a fair few of my goals already. I never thought I would say it, but I am enjoying training. Olly's enthusiasm and encouragement has made a real difference to my attitude. If you need someone to work alongside you to commit to your fitness objectives, Olly is definitely your man (as long as you can tolerate his cheesy one-liners)."

"My fitness journey with Olly started as a result of desperately trying to resolve an intermittent lower back pain issue. I needed to strengthen my core and kick start my body, which had suffered for many years of neglect through a lack of exercise. Olly had been recommended to me by many people as a great Pilates teacher and personal trainer. Word of mouth is the best recommendation, so I took the plunge.
I started with a weekly Pilates class and had no idea of the massive positive effect this first step would have on my physical and mental well-being. Olly has an amazing ability to identify what works for you as an individual, even in a group setting. He helps you to challenge yourself with support and encouragement, he becomes part of your team.
A few months on, I am fitter, leaner and much stronger in body and mind. Pilates is still one of the classes I attend regularly along with Boxercise®, circuit training and Kettlercise®.
If you are teetering on the edge but are hesitant that fitness is not for you - think again! Give Olly a call, it's the first step to making the change, meeting people just like you and surprising yourself with what you can achieve!"

"Olly prepared a fitness plan for me, consisting of a weekly one hour of personal training at my home together with two one hour sessions in his Pilates classes. My programme was not easy for me at aged 82 years and I had concerns at that stage of being unable to achieve the required level of fitness for my upcoming excavation dig. However, during the next three months under Olly's supervision and with my own persistence I gradually got to grips with my fitness sessions.
Olly was most consistent with his message that at my age he was not intending for me to achieve a peak state of fitness but much more importantly to increase my overall level of fitness and flexibility. I have taken very much to now embracing fitness as part of my day-to-day living.
I have also made many new friends at Olly's classes despite most of the other participants being a good 20 years younger than me! I have no embarrassment or concerns if I am unable to complete all the Pilates exercises. The encouragement and support I receive from the other members of my Pilates group is a great help.
During the past five months I have gained a great insight as to the real benefits of regular weekly exercise, particularly at my age. I joined the HIIT circuit training group on the top floor of Flemingate car park every Wednesday evening. Again, the circuit training group has introduced to me to a wider circle of friendships.
I would also say that because of my recent training experiences I now realise that frequent physical exercise maintains both a mental and physical wellbeing at any age but more so in later life. I recommend that anyone reading this contacts Olly to discuss their own fitness needs without delay. However, do remember it is entirely your own commitment to embrace a continuing weekly exercise routine as part of your ongoing physical and mental well-being whatever your age. It's all about you!"

"I knew Olly from the Beverley Leisure Centre Pilates class and asked him to plan a set of personal training sessions to strengthen and condition my upper body. As I regularly go running and spinning I was already exercising my lower body. Olly completed a comprehensive initial assessment so we could measure my progress. The sessions were fun (apart from the hard bits) but I knew if I put effort in, I would see greater results. He took into account my likes and dislikes and was tuned in to motivating me at the right moments. After 10 sessions I was impressed with the results and I am no spring chicken! He was also good company which made the sessions enjoyable. I have no problem recommending him as a personal trainer. Thank you Olly."

"Being a mum of three young boys and with a husband who works away a lot, it is always a juggle to fit everything in...especially me time.
Olly's classes are always great fun with lots of friendly banter. I have tried a variety of his classes and bizarrely the ones I enjoy most now are the ones I have been most apprehensive about trying. If you had said I would love spin and Kettlercise a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have believed you. Olly is a very professional and knowledgeable instructor and he gets to know you as a person rather than just being a person in a room.
I remember watching Strongman as a child and when I found out Olly was doing a class of the same name I was very intrigued and I must admit a little bit scared. Tyre flipping, farmer's walks, prowlers, beer kegs, battle ropes to name a few. I absolutely love it and the best thing is it's not the stereotypical class of big egos and big muscles. It's men and women of all shapes and sizes. Every week is different and you can certainly feel the difference.
I wouldn't hesitate in recommending Olly's classes and especially trying something new or different. I have toned up drastically when I regularly attend these classes and the best bit is it's fun too."

"I hurt my back when I was 20 years old lifting something heavy. Over the years I've had numerous flare ups that have accumulated in time off work. Doctors and specialists have said it's wear and tear and nothing can be done. My next step was going to chiropractors and osteopaths. Over the years I have attended numerous clinics without any long term gain, just large bills to pay.
I was recommended to try Pilates by a few people. I did some research and asked the local Facebook Beverley page for recommendations. Oliver Johnston's name was mentioned numerous times. I made contact and Oliver was a great help and gave me loads of advice. Unfortunately his classes were full and I was put on the waiting list. In May 2021 two places became available so my wife and I snapped these up.
On our first visit Olly made us very welcome, my only worry was mainly women. However this has improved with three men in my class (it's certainly not just for women).
I have been doing Pilates weekly now for seven months and the difference in my movement and flexibility is unreal. I get minimal flare-ups and I generally feel more positive that I'm in better shape and health.
I would 100% recommend Olly and his classes and if any men are reading this, don't shy away as everyone is so friendly."

"I started about three months ago with Oliver's HIIT circuit training, then added Kettlercise®, another circuit and Strongman to the mix. His manner and approach in his sessions is knowledgeable and very stimulating. He knows how to get you to go the extra length and make it fun at the same time. His sessions change every week making sure that you train different muscle groups and build up stamina and strength. His sessions have sparked my love for exercise and the benefit you reap from it. I would highly recommend to anyone."

"I have been doing Olly's Pilates classes for a few months now and I was loving them. Then lockdown came which I thought might be a fitness disaster for me. However, Olly quickly managed to get his Pilates class online. I was worried it would not have quite the same feel and that I would just forget to do them (I have tried to do A LOT of fitness videos). This has not happened! The online class is still great. Olly talks through each exercise making it easy to follow, keeps a good flow going and manages to correct my posture even though he can't see me. It's impressive.
I have also started his Vīrya class which covers strength and cardio. It hurts but it is brilliant. My children have got used to hearing me shout at Olly through the TV screen at about 40 minutes in (sorry Olly!). I have been doing it twice a week and I am feeling the difference.
I cannot recommend Olly's classes, both online and in person, enough. I warn you though, you will end up with an internal Olly voice that you will hear every time you try to excuse yourself from exercising!"

"After much persuasion from friends I decided a few weeks back to give Kettlercise® a go. Having got out of the habit of exercising for a fair few months I was a bit apprehensive about what it would be like and how much weight I could lift. Olly instantly put me at ease, and with either a useful suggestion on technique or a shockingly cheesy ‘inspirational quote’ he manages to encourage, motivate and entertain! Having started with fairly light kettles I’m really chuffed to be feeling stronger after only six weeks and to be lifting heavier weights.
Having made progress with Kettlercise® I’ve been inspired to start running again too and I’m really pleased that a niggly neck problem seems to have magically disappeared since the Kettlercise® has toned my upper back and shoulders.
Olly’s friendly, chilled approach brings out the best in me and makes me eager to continue to get fitter and stronger. Even in the pouring rain he manages to keep the class energy up - he is excellent at what he does and I’m really pleased I decided to join one of his classes. I can’t speak highly enough of him and as a nurse practitioner at the minor injuries unit I would happily recommend him to my patients who want to increase their health, fitness or self-esteem."

"I have been attending Olly's Wednesday evening Boxercise class for the past two months. I have to say it is fantastic. There are a number of moves to remember but constant instructions from Olly keep you in check. Even aged 50 I can really see a difference in my body shape and I feel stronger. It's a really fun class and a great way to meet new people. I was a bit nervous at first but the group are all fab and we have a laugh along with a great workout. Olly is the most committed, motivational and knowledgeable trainer I have met. I would highly recommend Boxercise to anyone of any age or ability."

"I started doing Olly's pilates and circuits classes about seven months ago. Prior to this, I had never really managed to sustain any fitness regime for more than a few weeks at a time. I would join a gym or start a new exercise class but my motivation levels would drop off after a few weeks and I’d soon become 'too busy'. As I approached 40 I had almost given up hope of ever getting fit!
However, Olly has changed all that - I now look forward to exercising and make it a priority over other activities that would previously have stopped me from going to the gym or a class. There are several reasons why this is the case: firstly, Olly’s classes are enjoyable (even the music some weeks!). Although Olly is serious about fitness, he is good humoured too and his positivity and enthusiasm are infectious! He makes everyone feel included and is very good at giving each person the attention they need to perfect a particular exercise or to modify it in a way that works for them. The small class sizes obviously help a lot with this - in a large class or gym it is easy to hide and remain anonymous but that doesn’t really help if you’re not sure what you’re doing or you're not very self-motivated!
Also, Olly really knows his stuff when it comes to fitness and exercise (as well as just about everything else!) and he really puts a lot of effort into planning the classes so that there is some continuation from week to week but also enough variation to keep things interesting. If anyone has a particular injury or condition, Olly’s knowledge means that he is able to adapt or change particular exercises to suit the individual and ensure they can still take part safely.
Of course, Olly’s own story of recovery from serious injuries is inspiring and certainly motivates me when I feel like giving up - if he can achieve such a high level of fitness in spite of those injuries, I really have no excuses! I still have a long way to go but since starting Olly’s classes I am significantly fitter, stronger and more flexible than I've probably ever been. Thanks Olly!"

"After a careful assessment of my health and fitness in May 2018, I came to the conclusion that I needed more exercise and to improve my general fitness levels, therefore I started Olly's circuit training classes after being recommended by a friend.
After just six months I had lost three stone and all aspects of my fitness, strength and health started to feel much better. Sessions have been hard work but great fun, along with being varied and interesting both indoor (spin) and outdoor (circuits, Kettlercise® and group events).
Olly has also been excellent in ensuring progress whilst avoiding aggravating existing injuries. He has a positive attitude, pushing you as far as you can go but also recognises when it's time to pull back.
Olly's classes have now become part of my weekly routine, trying to fit in two or three classes a week. The people taking part alongside me make it light-hearted and enjoyable whilst providing a great social element to exercise.
I could never see myself returning to a gym-based exercise programme as it always felt claustrophobic and repetitive.
To date I have lost 4.5 stone and 8” from my waist since first starting with Olly."
Chris
"As a 59 year old man, I'm not sure I've ever been as strong in my life as I am now, thanks to Olly and the Strongman classes. He has taken full-on Strongman and created a modified version that suits anyone and really tests and challenges your musculoskeletal system with a fantastically varied series of weight-resisted exercises and intense endurance and cardiovascular sets. You feel ready for anything after a few weeks, and most of all, it's great fun with a great team spirit in the group."
Andy
"Thank you Oliver for a very good exercise session on the Healthy Lifestyle program at Driffield Leisure Centre today, also the helpful advice on stretching leg muscles. It's great to have an instructor who takes a detailed interest in individual participants regardless of age or ability. We need you to have a permanent position here so we get continuity. Well done!"

"Enthusiastic, motivational, knowledgeable, approachable, energetic, professional; are just a few of the words I could use to describe Olly. As a result his classes are enjoyable.
I have recently come back to exercise after many, many years off. I was struggling to find anything that kept me motivated. I was that stereotype, pay for a gym membership, attend for a week and then lose interest. I came across Olly’s Pilates class and decided to give it a try. Eight months on and I now attend more than one Pilates class as well as circuit training, Kettlercise® and spinning classes. The difference for me, compared to other exercise classes I have attended, is the instructor.
The class sizes are only small therefore Olly is able to help you, motivate you and move you forward. As a result of this encouragement I progressed over the months from attending just one Pilates class to the variety of classes. Although I felt a little apprehensive, mainly about being fit enough to attend, I had no reason to worry. At all the classes I was made to feel very welcome and have been surprised by the varying fitness levels and abilities. Due to Olly’s encyclopaedic knowledge of fitness and exercise everyone can achieve at his classes. All exercises can be adapted to suit your strengths and weaknesses, everyone is made to feel comfortable about working at their own level and pace. If you find something a little challenging, Olly offers encouragement and humour to keep you motivated.
So for once I have signed up for something and many months later am still sticking with it and still enjoying it. I no longer look for excuses to get out of exercising but look forward to it! I cannot recommend these classes highly enough."
Sarah Jane
"I have been taking spin classes for over 10 years and Olly is right up there with the best instructors. His classes are highly energised, results focused and fun. He is an excellent and highly talented instructor. We are lucky to have him at David Lloyd."
Jenny R
"I have been practising Pilates for over 10 years and joined Olly's classes around 18 months ago. I can honestly say that it's the most fun and challenging Pilates I have ever done. The people are super friendly and Olly is great at making the class really inclusive so anyone, whether a beginner or a more experienced person, can get something from the sessions. I've been so inspired that I'm now training to be a Pilates instructor myself."
Amanda W
"Thank you for the top stretching session that you took me through yesterday. I felt like a different runner today! I can't believe the difference after being so 'creaky' yesterday - I did a good hour on the trails - and I know that it was the work that you did with me that has made the difference. I need to get into the habit of working through the stretches with the same structured progressions that you planned. It was great to work with someone who took notice of where the tight, overworked areas were and to be given some variations on stretches that I would normally do. Thank you and please let me know if you are going to be in my neck of the woods again - I could do with a regular session with you!"

"As sales director of a progressive and forward thinking organisation I wanted to arrange some team exercises we could all enjoy together. Furthermore we wanted to “live” our brand proposition #PositivityFuel. Having known Olly and experienced the benefits of his Pilates and spin classes over the last 18 months and having had great fun along the way, it was an obvious choice to get in touch with Olly and arrange a Pilates class for the team.
It was great fun and the class Olly put together had a good combination of exercises for both the beginner and intermediate. The team universally enjoyed the session and we had a very beneficial team get-together into the bargain. I would heartily recommend Olly to your business for a similar experience."
Jamie Lowe, Sales Director Ritter Sport UK
"Last night I attended a Pilates class hosted by Olly. I had seen it advertised on Facebook and decided to give it a go following a bit of banter with Olly. It was the first time I had done Pilates and I was a bit sceptical about what was involved and any fitness benefits. How wrong I was! It was absolutely brilliant and Olly was fantastic at helping a first-time pupil like me get the best out of it - I'm sure many of my cycling colleagues would also benefit from this."

""If you don't challenge yourself, you don't change yourself" this is one of the many cheesy motivational phrases that you will find yourself chanting by the end of any of Olly's sessions. This particular phrase resonates strongly with me, as I had always been a keen runner, but injury meant that I had to take some time off and find a different way to exercise whilst I recuperated. This is when I first participated in Olly's circuit training class. I had attended circuit sessions before at other venues, but what I particularly love about this class is the small number of participants. Olly restricts the class size so that he can guarantee that all members receive individual attention to ensure that correct technique is being adhered to so injury is prevented, as "what doesn't kill us makes us stronger". Or so that progression or regression techniques can be incorporated to ensure that "we're not wishing for it, we're working for it".
From attending this one weekly class I wanted to challenge myself more, as "nothing worth having was achieved without effort", so when Olly set up his Boxercise class, I jumped at the chance to participate. As "excuses don't burn calories", when Olly offered me a place at his popular spin class I jumped at the chance.
Having attended many of Olly's classes for several years now I can fully recommend them. Olly is a complete professional and spends many hours out of class ensuring he has the requisite qualifications and insurance to teach the class safely. He also regularly updates his programmes to ensure that they are challenging and diverse, as "you can either feel sore tomorrow or sorry tomorrow. You choose." Each bespoke class showcases Olly's encyclopedic knowledge of anatomy and physiology to fully work all muscle groups, as "it's the range that makes the change". Olly's classes also feature a truly tailored, eclectic range of music that fully complements the activity and motivates participants to push themselves to exhaustion, as "if you ain't dying, you ain't trying."
In addition to the excellent quality of training Olly offers, the other class participants are awesome. Through these classes I have made a number of friends, as everyone is very welcoming and supportive of each other. Participants in Olly's classes have several opportunities to socialise throughout the year; this ranges from challenging sporting events to local drinks or pétanque.
If you're looking to improve your health and wellbeing in a well-structured, challenging yet supportive environment with motivational cheesy one liners and killer tunes, then Olly will offer a class that will benefit you. I guess the only question that you need to consider "isn't can you? It's 'will you?'", as "if you aim at nothing, you will hit it"."
Liz
"I really enjoyed the Kettlercise® class, thank you. The hour just flew by, probably because I was concentrating so much and I certainly ached on Saturday morning, so I must have been doing something right!
Strange to say I also found it very relaxing. Your instructions were great as I do not have the best coordination and it was particularly good that you came round to tweak what we were supposed to be doing. It will be a while before I get to the 10kg kettlebell though!!
You may well have a convert!"
Stella
"I've been attending Olly's group circuits class for approximately four years following a recommendation from my wife who was really enjoying the group activity. I was initially reluctant as I prefer to exercise alone (running/gym etc.). However I have really enjoyed the camaraderie and commitment that is part of Olly's group classes.
Olly takes time to ensure the correct technique is applied to each exercise and is quick to rectify any issues that might cause injury. It feels a really safe environment to test yourself and Olly does encourage you to push that little bit harder each session. Each week is varied and I'd like to say it gets easier but the variety in exercises keeps it challenging.
Over the years I've also participated ad hoc in a number of his other classes (Strongman, Pilates and even spin). Each class is tough and yet enjoyable but I find it logistically tricky to attend them regularly.
Olly's classes are also a great social activity and over the years he has organised some great team exercises including dodgeball, softball and pétanque. His classes are inclusive regardless of age and ability and I would really recommend you give them a try if you fancy a mix of fun and exercise with someone who does actually know what he is talking about (Olly not me)."

"I have known Oliver for many years and he is a first-class individual, person and coach. Oliver has interpersonal and client care skills that many coaches can only dream about. This is matched by his intelligence and most importantly he backs that up with dedication that is second to none.
He has vast experience of dealing with people at all levels and abilities, he has what I refer to as 'indexicality'. I get amazing positive feedback from customers, health professionals and my colleagues about how enjoyable his sessions are and how they are impressed by his knowledge and manner.
When it comes to motivation, Oliver is living proof that anything is possible when you put your mind to it. Oliver has overcome the most horrid injuries; he survived a horrendous car crash. Oliver's experience of pain has shaped his positivity, he is truly a gentleman and an asset to any organisation."

"Having researched the benefits of Kettlercise® as a mixed cardio and strength-based exercise programme I started classes at my local gym. I soon realised that Olly's classes were different to the other instructors. There was more energy in the room and Olly took time to get to know his participants so that he could give personalised feedback and encourage you to get more out of the session.
Joining his outdoor class gave me the opportunity to add fresh air into the mix and meet a group of new friends. The sense of achievement after a session in wind and rain just adds to the all-body workout. But nothing quite compares to lying on a mat enjoying an all-body stretch at the end of a session while looking at the stars on a crisp, cold winter's night."
Lisa
"Olly I just love your spinning classes, hard workout but well worth the effort. Never burnt so many calories."
Shelley
"I couldn't have found a better person to take on my unusual request of having a fun and energetic bootcamp workout to end my hen do weekend. Oliver was so easy to talk to when explaining what I had in mind for me and my hens, he also totally put my mind at easy when I was worried about my mum joining in the workout. On the day itself, Oliver came with plenty of time to set up all his equipment and went through all the exercises so we knew exactly what we had to do. He was super motivational and supportive and made the whole experience a great addition to my hen weekend! I couldn't recommend him enough!"

"I’ve been doing circuits with Olly for a couple of months, and I’m really enjoying his classes! He makes them fun even when they are hard work, and he’s really encouraging and motivating. The range of different exercises keeps us all interested, and we have a great time. The circuit group is really sociable, I’d recommend it to anyone wanting to keep fit in a fun way!"
Kate
"I have always enjoyed some form of exercise but for me it was about finding something that I enjoyed so much I wanted to commit to and where the enjoyment will not fizzle out!! I can safely say hand on heart that Olly's classes really fulfil this for me, having tried and tested Kettlercise® classes, circuit training and most recently spin. I am hooked!
I instantly felt at ease in my first session, the group was welcoming and Olly really gave me that zest for wanting to get fitter which led to me wanting to try out circuit training and spin. Both of these classes again are great and are such a good workout! They are all run professionally by Olly but he does have the gift of making them fun so the whole time I am wanting to push myself to the limits and this really comes from Olly's great motivational skills, as well as his knowledge of health and fitness.
All I can say is I am loving my journey of getting fit and healthy, plus I am thrilled also that my other half is now hooked on spin classes and my mum on Kettlercise®! It really is a family affair."
Sonia
"A big fat recommendation for these Pilates classes. Pilates saved me from daily pain but not done right can do little or no good. Oliver is a real professional and makes sure everything is done safely. I've been to a few classes now (including some shocking local ones) and this is the best!"
Emma
"I have recently started attending Oliver's spin classes. They are challenging and at points push you to the limit! However, throughout the process, Oliver is with you: providing technical guidance and importantly the encouragement and motivation to get you to the finish line. He makes you believe you can do it and even finds the energy to humour you on the way. Very approachable and a true professional, Oliver is a highly competent instructor. I would recommend his classes to anyone who needs some positive energy in their life. If you get yourself there, Oliver will get you through!"
Sarah
"When Olly first approached to ask if I was interested in signing up for his new circuit training class, I wasn't particularly enthusiastic. However, I wanted to support him after all the hard work he had put in with his own punishing schedule, his achievements and the setting up of his business so I agreed and signed up for the first eight weeks. After the first couple of weeks of looking like I was part of Monty Python’s Ministry of Silly Walks, I began to enjoy the training sessions and it wasn't long before I could get up the next day without groaning.
Attending these sessions is like having your own personal instructor without the hefty price tag. Run in small groups of 10, Olly keeps an eye on each of us, running between and making sure our technique is correct and if he thinks we are making it look too easy he offers up a progression to ensure we are getting the most out of the session. Everyone gets individual attention and encouragement and I would definitely recommend anyone to give one of Olly's classes a try. Olly makes the hard work fun. I have been attending Olly's circuit training for over a year now and routines are changed regularly to make sure all muscle groups are worked and I have definitely seen an improvement in my own ability and this training has also helped with my running and cycling.
The only groans now are when Olly throws in a few of his cheesy homilies. Seriously, this is well worth signing up for."
Jayne
"I started Oliver's Pilates class last February. I was extremely nervous meeting Oliver and if my 75 year old body could cope with exercise after many years of neglect.
I am very happy to say I just love Pilates and Oliver's instruction. He demonstrates each exercise giving different options for beginners and more advanced students then he quietly comes around the class and assists us into the correct positions. My body has improved immensely and I now look forward to two classes each week. I cannot thank you enough Oliver for the difference you have made to my physical fitness."
Christine
"Having never punched anything (or anyone) I did wonder if Boxercise would be for me. With Olly as instructor I needn’t have worried.
Olly’s Boxercise classes (just like his other group exercise classes) are well-organised and well-resourced, they are planned thoroughly, structured well, expertly delivered and are such good value for money.
During the Boxercise class Olly pays particular attention to our boxing technique by constantly observing and then providing invaluable advice and feedback throughout which enables us to get the most from our workout in a safe and injury-free manner.
The classes are designed to be inclusive for all, they are fast paced and fun. Boxercise classes include: an epic warm-up; lots of pad work incorporating the different punches and movements and a range of drills, which are so much fun. All of this taking place in the most amazing of settings; the top floor of the Flemingate car park overlooking the wonderful view of Beverley and the Minster.
The classes are kept small in number, we swap partners regularly during the class and also work together as a group so you very quickly get to know one another and become part of the Boxercise team. Everyone is made to feel incredibly welcome - Olly wouldn’t have it any other way.
Olly's enthusiasm for all things fitness is infectious, his knowledge and professionalism are second to none and his ability to inspire and motivate us all to believe that ‘we can’ is incredible. I am so glad I gave Boxercise a chance, I feel fitter and stronger already because of it and the 500 (on average) calories burnt each class are an added bonus!"
Samantha T
"We have done Olly's spin classes for a couple of years now and have recently started doing his Kettlercise® classes. His classes are always welcoming, fun and very motivational and Olly himself is very encouraging and you can tell he is very passionate about what he does. He caters for all ages and abilities. He is the best instructor we have had the pleasure of working out with."
Ashleigh and Steph
"A Pilates session with Olly was the ideal icebreaker activity for our hen party! He was able to challenge us all, have a laugh and entertained us with all kinds of funny motivational phrases. I would really recommend Olly as a private group trainer when you are looking to do something a bit different with your friends. There's a limit to how many afternoon teas you want to go to! A fitness class with Olly will get you all laughing instantly."
Leah
"With any kind of instructor I always look for secure subject knowledge, an ability to communicate clearly, someone who offers differentiated alternatives and finally an inspirational role model. I can, without hesitation, say that Olly ticks all of these boxes. I love the level of challenge in his classes and the encouragement to perform each exercise in a technically correct fashion. Each week I look forward to his outdoor circuit class, whatever the weather, and always feel refreshed and revitalised afterwards! Olly cultivates a really positive and supportive atmosphere in his classes and his dodgy music collection keeps us all entertained!"
Heather
"I really enjoyed Olly's Pilates class. It was very professional with clear instructions throughout the hour. There was a good range of exercises suitable for everyone of any ability. I was impressed with how supportive Olly was when I was unsure about doing some exercises due to a spinal injury. I would highly recommend his Pilates class to anyone wishing to improve their posture, strength, concentration and general well-being. Many thanks for your time and patience."
Susie
"Ace Indoor Cycling Class - Thank You! As a keen user of a number of the classes at Haltemprice Leisure Centre, I look forward to 'Indoor Cycling' and attend a series of classes each week. Oliver held a class on 20 March and the class was explosive-fast, fun and challenging. The music and content was seamless and the class moved swiftly - it was 45 minutes of professional instruction. East Riding Leisure - 'Make Oliver a permanent fixture at Haltemprice'."
Lee
"Oliver is fantastic! What a workout, but much more. Using the newest methods, Oliver designs outdoor circuits to to improve flexibility and endurance, and to train different muscle groups. Most importantly, he takes care that the exercises are done properly. He is attentive to each participant’s individual ability and needs, and his guidance is always supportive."
Lilou and Thomas
"Oliver has thrown himself into the Pilates class and has given 100 per cent. The Friday class is small but on a positive level it has given Oliver the opportunity of observing all participants and assisting to ensure that all attendees have the correct posture, which is important to Pilates. He clearly demonstrates each level with enthusiasm. Oliver encourages participants to push forward and achieve beyond what one would expect. In only a week both myself and my 78 year old mother feel positively energised and encouraged that nothing is impossible."
Helen
"I thoroughly enjoy Olly's spin classes, he's one of the best if not the best instructor I've had. The class is highly energised, challenging but most of all it's fun and that's because Olly puts so much time and effort into his programmes, with great music choice which is highly motivating. Olly is very motivational, passionate with a great knowledge about the science behind the workout...I feel I'm in safe hands. He makes spinning enjoyable and that's what exercising should be."
Louise
"I just wanted to message to thank you. I have noticed a significant improvement in my fitness and muscle tone. I am feeling fitter and more motivated.
I had lost my motivation a bit before starting your circuit training and had got into a bit of a rut with exercise. I now look forward to Wednesdays and the challenge.
I also do not underestimate the efforts you go to not only in the sessions but in preparation. I know it is your job but there are others who do not go to half the effort, enthusiasm and specialist knowledge you do.
Enough thanks now!! But I always think people should get feedback when they are good at something."
Heidi
"I am thoroughly enjoying Olly's private Pilates classes. As someone who has mobility and balance issues, I come away from each class feeling stronger and more able. Olly is absolutely committed to seeing his clients get the most out of every session and he teaches for all ability levels. He is totally professional and makes each class challenging but enjoyable. I'm looking forward to continuing in the new year. Thank you, Olly."
Vicki
"I joined Oliver's circuits class with some trepidation as I was a complete novice. I needn't have worried! Oliver explained all the exercises clearly and made it surprisingly fun too! Interest was kept with the varied exercises, motivational quotes and lots of laughs! But, I always knew I had been to a class the next day and definitely felt fitter and stronger. I would recommend these classes to everyone!"
Abi
"Oliver started covering spin classes at my gym a month or so ago. He has made me actually enjoy spinning. At first, I used to dread my spin days; but now I look forward to my spin days. I have even started doing double classes! His music choices are fast, pacey and motivating. Oliver knows how to get results and just his spin classes alone are starting to yield results on the scales."
Anthony
"A friend suggested I tried a circuits class with Oliver. I had my reservations as I'm not a gym-goer and thought a personal trainer sounded rather intimidating. However I've now been doing Oliver's circuits class for a couple of months and I really enjoy it! It's challenging, and I can feel I've worked my muscles - but I've noticed a real improvement. Our circuits class is fun and sociable and Oliver is knowledgeable, encouraging and friendly. I highly recommend him!"
Katy
"Olly is an extremely dedicated, knowledgeable and motivating instructor. I would recommend his fitness classes to anyone committed to their fitness regardless of their ability. Everyone is encouraged to work at their individual level to get the best out of their workout."
Becky
"After I picked up a shoulder injury the only gym I could manage was spinning. I was spinning four times a week and was getting very fed up and not wanting to gym. I had lost all my motivation but then Olly started covering classes at Xercise4Less and I rediscovered my love for spinning. His classes are energetic, hard but a lot of fun. His choice of music is great. He is naturally great at motivating people. His classes are so much fun it hardly feels like a workout. I look forward to spinning again."
Stacey
"Turning 40 and in danger of becoming a fat dad, I was still a little reluctant to try a fitness class. Olly’s circuit training was fun, tested muscles I didn’t know I had, and I could see the difference it made to my form from the very first session. I’ll be back!"
Tom
"I feel very lucky to be able to take part in Olly’s spin classes. It makes such a difference having an instructor who is motivating, inspirational and extremely passionate about what he does. Thank you Olly for helping me on my journey to a more healthy, happy me."
Wendy
"I attend the Pilates classes at Walkington on a Friday. Last week I hurt my back doing too much digging! I contacted Olly as I wasn't sure I should attend the class with a bad back. Olly advised me to come and take things gradually at my own pace. After the class my pain was much less and the following day had mostly disappeared. So thank you Olly for the input. Highly recommend these classes."
Sue
"Having attended two ‘Indoor cycling’ classes which Oliver has taught recently, I would like to express how much I enjoyed the class.
If possible could you provide a permanent class for Oliver to teach ‘Indoor cycling’ in your forthcoming timetable. As, one, it would be great to have an alternative to RPM! and two, Oliver is a motivational teacher."
Yvette
"I really enjoyed Olly's approach to fitness training. Having rarely enjoyed strenuous exercise, Olly made it fun with a great balance of genuine praise and good-natured humour. If you live in the area, definitely try out his sessions!"
Molly
"Just enjoyed the hardest spinning class I've done. Burnt an extra 35 calories despite having a tummy ache and being awake a couple of hours during the night. I couldn't stop the sweat from dripping. If we had Oliver as our instructor I would get even fitter. I just love a class that is planned so well you do not realise how many calories you're burning."
Andrea
"Since spinning in classes with Olly, he is highly motivational, knowledgeable and a great guy.
He is clearly passionate about his sport. burn at least 40-70 calories more in 45 mins with Olly than any other spin/rpm instructor.
If I owned a gym I'd definitely have Olly as my chief instructor."
Laura
"Really enjoyed Oliver's post-natal exercise class, it catered for people of all abilities and I really felt that Oliver put every effort into working with my own (and everybody else's) individual needs. A great work out, and great fun, I just wish the leisure centre had carried the classes on!"
Catherine
"As an 'ex runner' I have been trying various groups and exercise formats to try and keep fit with shattered knees. Joining a new group and mode of exercise is never easy and this is what I found different with Oliver's spinning session. The session itself is energetic which I suppose all sessions are but Oliver's friendly and engaging demeanour encourages you to go back for more. From a professional perspective as a GP, I find too many of my patients giving up due to lack of this fun and engagement. Unfortunately I haven't been able to get to any of Oliver's classes on regular basis due to the fact that he does not seem to have any regular ones. Perhaps you would consider this."
Sam
"I have been attending Oliver's spin classes for quite some time now. I really enjoy the variety of tracks, the music and how the tracks are always perfectly choreographed to get the best workout.
Oliver himself is a very motivational individual and this in turn motivates me to put everything into a workout. The classes are always friendly and Oliver always makes people feel very welcome.
I have also attended circuits that Oliver has taken/put on at the gym I attend. They were also very good.
The time and effort that Oliver puts in to his planning clearly shows in the classes he takes. Thank you Oliver!"

"After plucking up the courage to start spinning at my gym, me and a friend started spinning on different nights of the week. After trying most instructors we weren't quite convinced until taking one of Oliver's classes. We found his classes great exercise, fun and enjoyable while massively improving our fitness. We now make sure we attend all of his classes. He changes the classes a bit and we still haven't found one we haven't enjoyed. His most recent class is great. He also makes the time to talk to you afterwards to offer advice which is really useful. Due to the standard of his class me and the wife are looking to book some personal sessions to help move us closer to our fitness goal."
Darrell
"Thank you for arranging the Pilates class. I had a really great time considering I had never done it before. I think Olly's session was a nice introduction to Pilates and I really understood the benefits. In future I hope to incorporate Pilates into my workouts."
Sithabile
"I have attended several of Oliver's spin classes, they are upbeat, fast-paced and as enjoyable as a tough spin class can be. Every class I have been surprised by the high calorie burn recorded on my Fitbit. Oliver is very informative during the class about the science behind the workout, recovery and suggestions about what to eat after the class. He is very approachable and takes time to answer any queries anyone has."
Sally
"Finally after a good two years of inactivity, OWJ's circuit training classes have given me the motivation and challenge to get back into shape. The classes are designed to let each trainee work at their own pace with Olly encouraging us individually to reach our maximum potential. I am getting stronger each session with the results branching out into my everyday life including on the job and on the tennis court. Thanks Olly, I'm looking forward to the autumn/winter sessions!"
Nancy
"After going through a bit of a rough patch at home I'd totally lost my mojo and was finding it hard to get back into the gym and my spin classes that I used to love so much. I decided to give Oliver's class a go when I found out he was covering and finally got the 'spin bug' back. The music was fantastic and you couldn't help but keep up with the beats, so that made you work so much harder. He is very, very motivational and even though I felt disappointed in myself as I couldn't do it half as well as I used to be able to, I got so much encouragement I felt great!! Now I try to get to as many spin classes as I can around my job and I can feel myself improving and pushing myself harder at every session. I couldn't have done it without his help and support!! And I mean this in the nicest way but "I love to hate you" ha ha! Your classes are brutal but my god are they amazing! Keep being fantastic, and a HUGE thank you!!"
Alexandra
''Olly conducted a Pilates class at my sister-in-law's hen party and not only was it interesting and beneficial for my own knowledge and fitness, it was also fun! Although Olly was pushing us to do the exercises properly for our own benefit (we needed a bit of discipline as you can imagine at a hen party), he still joined in on the jokes and still encouraged a hen party fun environment! Perhaps Pilates may not be one of your usual activities/ideas for a hen party but if you are considering it, Olly is the man to make it worth it!''
Ariel
"Another great spinning class with Oliver this morning. What a good instructor he is. The 45 minutes fly by because you do enjoy it so much. Whoever hasn't tried Oliver's spinning class yet you must give it a go and I'm sure you will become addicted to it."
Olesia
"Another fantastic circuits workout today. As someone who is afraid of gyms and exercise classes, I have to to say working out outdoors is definitely something to try. Olly designs workouts that will put you through your paces and build confidence in your ability but without intimidation. The group atmosphere is great and really keeps you going. Thanks for getting an exercise newbie started."
Victoria
"I have been going to spin classes for just over three years now which technically means I'm a seasoned spinner. After joining a new gym Oliver started covering and eventually got a spot. As a cyclist I can say that Oliver trains you very hard and the results definitely show. I highly recommend Oliver's enthusiastic high-paced spin classes to anyone who is thinking of having a go."
Stuart
"Oliver's outdoor circuit classes are great. I was half expecting to hate them but found myself enjoying them; especially once the fourth circuit was complete! I loved being outdoors, having a different set of exercises each week and great positive comments from Oliver. I can highly recommend the classes and suggest that anyone gives them a go."
Amanda M
"Your classes are quality, Oliver. I've trained at many fitness centres and you are right at the top with your professionalism, enthusiasm and encouragement. You know your stuff and I enjoy every class; I just want more Oliver classes! Quality instructors like yourself make us feel, whatever our age and fitness level, we are achieving good training. Every time I finish one of your classes I feel I've done a great workout and that's why I turn up every week to your class. You have, Oliver, what other instructors don't have, you enjoy what you do and that reflects on the class."
Dee
"What can I say, I have been attending spin classes and I love them. Oliver is very professional, he is focused on getting the best out of you. He is very motivational and passionate about his classes as am I. I thoroughly enjoy having Oliver as my spin instructor. I just wish he had more classes at David Lloyd as I cannot always get to the class he has, please give him some more classes."
Lianne
"Fantastic Pilates class with Oliver Johnston last night - I’ve been doing Pilates for about six years with the same instructor so was great to be able to take a class while visiting family in Beverley. Just the right amount of challenge, humour, encouragement and sweat! Can’t wait to drop in again."
Suzi
"Really enjoying Oliver's spinning classes! Oliver's choice of music is great and his ability to motivate you to push yourself is even better! Cheers Oliver!"

"I have been attending Haltemprice Sports Centre all my life and have been a member of the gym since 2005. In the last four or five years I have started attending classes, some good, some not so good.
In the last three years I have got heavily into cycling and regularly attend RPM and indoor cycling classes instructed by many different people. Usually you know which instructor you are going to have so when there is a change and someone else turns up it can go one of two ways.
Over the last year or more Oliver has covered quite a few classes in the RPM slot and I would like to feedback that he is absolutely excellent in delivering his version of RPM – ok so he is not Les Mills accredited – but the 45 minute class is filled with interesting routines set to a backdrop of excellent music designed to get you in the zone. A big redeeming feature is the constant encouragement to be the best you can be – not compete with each other – just do yourself justice. The fact that he clearly puts a lot of effort and planning into his class shows through and rubs off on the class. I have a heavier calorie burn in Oliver’s classes than in anyone else’s.
For me – he needs to be offered more classes – better still some permanent classes.
What prompted me to write this was actually my wife who attends Pilates. She came home last week and said that a guy had been covering her class and that he was brilliant, took his time and was thorough with the class. It turns out this was also Oliver."
Andrew
"Would greatly recommend a session with Olly. Having not done Pilates for a long while Olly made us all feel at ease with a relaxed, enjoyable and inspiring session. Great to do as a fun work breakout session."
Katy C
"I found your class workout routine to be very good with a variety of exercises to suit all abilities. I liked that you introduced new things for us to try. Keep up the good work."
Jean
"Cracking Pilates session. Good to see the old wit, dry sense of humour, anatomy and biomechanics lesson are still part and parcel of your rather unique repertoire, not to mention your recruitment campaign to draw in 'lambs to the slaughter' to your numerous other torture classes. Great stuff, you're a legend! The ability to reach other parts of the body some beers just cannot reach!
Whilst I may well be in a minority or 'rare' breed of man who attends these type of classes, I appreciate the enormous benefits of Pilates, BodyBalance, yoga, Tai Chi allied to the higher intensity forms of exercise. BodyBalance, Pilates, etc. are certainly not soft touches, as anyone who has partaken in such a class will acknowledge. I personally think it's good to dovetail a combination of different forms of exercise into one's individual weekly programme for an all-round workout. I also find Pilates, Body Balance, yoga, Tai Chi great for the mind."
Steven
"One thing I keep meaning to say to you is that while the last year [2020-21 - Covid-19] has been a bit sh***y for all the reasons we well understand, I think what you have done with your Pilates classes (and no doubt other classes too but I can't comment on them) is alongside the fitness/torture element you've created communities - don't underestimate the value in that for people's well-being. I attended a Pilates class in my local town for around eight years and it was really good from a physical perspective but had nowhere near the community/sociability feel that your classes do. You should be proud of what you've done."

"First spin class with Olly, great class. Great instruction throughout the class, very clear. Great soundtrack too. Hope to see him in more classes."
Mike
"I love my Pilates class with Olly. I’ve only been going for a couple of months. I always thought Pilates was a relaxing, mindful class. My friend asked me to try it and I was taken by surprise after my first class how hard it was and totally not what I was expecting. I've always enjoyed running and high impact classes, Pilates complements these perfectly, particularly as I am now 50 years old and need to maintain all-round functional capability. My core strength has improved dramatically. If I arrive feeling a little stressed, I leave feeling totally relaxed and refreshed. Olly is brilliant. His instructions are clear, constant and he tailors to individual needs. He is so welcoming and knows everyone by name and makes it fun in addition to making you work hard. I highly recommend Olly’s Pilates class to everyone of any age or ability."
Carrie
“Hugely professional and clearly very passionate about what he does. Having scoured the internet for the ‘right’ personal trainer and still been uninspired, I chose Oliver after he was recommended by a friend. Oliver has understood my specific needs and provided me with exactly what I required in terms of a programme which will fit my slightly unconventional work/life routine. He is clearly very knowledgeable within his field and does not just offer a ‘one size fits all’ service. Whatever your needs, goals, age, experience, or ability, I can thoroughly recommend Oliver."
Miles
Fiona
Marie
"Thank you soooo much for your excellent training sessions that have certainly put me through my paces. Your coaching tips, words of encouragement and yes...even your cheesy one-liners have made each session such a buzz. You have re-ignited my love of exercise and reassured me that my body is still able to cope with it.
What a fantastic 10 weeks. You have a totally honest approach to your business which transcends everything you do. It is what makes you such a great trainer and all round good guy. I will definitely be recommending you to others and needing you in 2018 for the Great North Run."
Catriona
Marcus
"Olly is massively enthusiastic about YOUR fitness and how you are progressing. He monitors your improvement, helps you understand your strengths as well as the areas that need more work. Above all he's a great guy too - I've totally changed my body shape since working with Olly and I always look forward to my class because I know it is personally tailored for me."
Dan S
"Working with Olly has been a fantastic experience. I had a clear goal I wanted to achieve: to train for the police fitness test and ensure I was able to meet the bleep test requirements. He designed a bespoke programme with this in mind and I have seen a big improvement in my fitness and well-being. I can now easily achieve the required fitness levels in the test, and have a new love for exercise. Olly is a welcoming and knowledgeable coach, and he’s helped me to achieve big lifestyle improvements."
Alice
"I have been doing Olly's circuit training sessions for a couple of months now and thoroughly enjoy the brilliant full body workout I get. The best thing about the sessions is that they are all-inclusive, everyone works at their own level and pace, they suit beginners but also challenge the more experienced. I would (and frequently do) highly recommend Olly's circuits to anyone who wants a fun, challenging and different workout."
Jane
Amy

Charlotte
"I want to express my thanks to Olly who has helped to rehabilitate my arm after my accident. I was beginning to think that I would never be able to lift my arm up high and that rotation was a thing of the past.
First, Olly asked me what I wanted to get out of the training sessions. Full use of the arm! Then he went away and organised an extensive tailor-made programme of exercise perfect for me.
He is a brilliant personal trainer always punctual, encouraging and enthused. He knows exactly what a particular exercise is for and for these reasons it was worth every penny!"
Helen
Maxine
"It is a pleasure to be working with Olly. With his evident knowledge and experience, he has re-invigorated my regular exercise regime. His positive and encouraging approach is helping me, being aged 78, to keep fit and active through a difficult patch. This, I am finding, is very supportive and know will stand me in good stead in the months to come, enabling me to return to full fitness as soon as possible."
Brian

Connor
Jess

Sandra
Rebecca F
Darren

Malcolm

Ruth
Gill
"I have been attending Olly's Wednesday evening Boxercise class for the past two months. I have to say it is fantastic. There are a number of moves to remember but constant instructions from Olly keep you in check. Even aged 50 I can really see a difference in my body shape and I feel stronger. It's a really fun class and a great way to meet new people. I was a bit nervous at first but the group are all fab and we have a laugh along with a great workout. Olly is the most committed, motivational and knowledgeable trainer I have met. I would highly recommend Boxercise to anyone of any age or ability."
Carrie

Well done!"
David

Mandi
Aaron
Amanda W
